(plat-ih-SEER-ee-um )

Horn’s Surprise

Subfamily Platycerioideae

Genus Platycerium

“Horn’s Surprise hybrid is a cross of P. alcicorne and P. madagascariense. Named for Jerry Horn, a nurseryman in Florida and was one of the first experts on platyceriums. Because of the light green color, it is thought to be hybridized from an African form of P. alcicorne.” – Halling

“The black coloration on the basal fronds started when the location and watering changed slightly due to high winds damaging its old home. Otherwise it has persistent green fronds with a high gloss sheen.” – Hideaway Palmetum
